Dr. Tapan Mukerji Named a VIP Member by Cambridge Who's Who
Dr. Tapan Mukerji enjoys an illustrious career as educator, mentor, researcher, and author

PALO ALTO, CA, June 9, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ --Dr. Tapan Mukerji, Associate Professor at Stanford University, has been selected by Cambridge Who's Who as a VIP member for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in academia.

A respected educator, mentor, researcher and author, Dr. Mukerji enjoys working in academia because of the limitless opportunities for learning that it presents. He is best known for his knowledge of rock physics, geostatistics and wave propagation, which he readily shares with earth science, engineering and biology majors at Stanford. Teaching and learning go hand-in-hand in his research work.

Collaborating with both students and colleagues, Dr. Mukerji focuses on integrating his three subjects of expertise and exploring their broad applications in reservoir characterization and monitoring. He introduces graduate and undergraduate pupils to mathematical methods for modeling, data analysis, and simulation using high-level software.

Dr. Mukerji co-directs the Stanford Center for Reservoir Forecasting (SCRF) and is involved in the research activities of different industrial consortia— Stanford Rock Physics and Borehole Geophysics (SRB), Basin and Petroleum System Modeling (BPSM) and the Smart Fields Consortium (SFC). His research uses theoretical, computational, and statistical models to discover and understand fundamental relations between geophysical data and reservoir properties, to quantify uncertainty in models, and to address value of information for decision making under uncertainty. He strives to forge links between research disciplines in geosciences, engineering, and management sciences, spurred by the belief that research links across traditional boundaries are critical for the future of energy resources research.

Dr. Mukerji has published his findings in journals and textbooks. Most notably, he co-authored "The Rock Physics Handbook: Tools for Seismic Analysis of Porous Media" and "Quantitative Seismic Interpretation: Applying Rock Physics Tools to Reduce Interpretation Risk," which have been used as resources for students and researchers and as material for university and industry courses. Dr. Mukerji considers utilizing his expertise to mentor graduate students in their own research work to be the most enjoyable aspect of his career, because it enables him to learn at the same time that he is teaching. He attributes his success to his education and the support he received from his parents and teachers.
A Stanford alumnus himself, Dr. Mukerji received a Ph.D. in geophysics in 1995. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the American Geophysical Union, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, which honored him with a J. Clarence Karcher Award. As he moves forward, Dr. Mukerji aspires to attain professorship at his alma mater and complete his third book, tentatively entitled "Value of Information in Earth Science."
