Dr. Bower's involvement in the health care field includes teaching, chairing, writing and consulting

OAKLAND, CA, May 26, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ --Fay L. Bower, DNSc, Chairwoman and Professor at Holy Names University, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in health care education
.
With an approach to hard work similar to that of the "Energizer Bunny," Dr. Bower maintains the same zest for her profession that she had when she established her career as a pediatric nurse at Stanford University Hospital more than six decades ago. Since then, she has built an impressive and comprehensive repertoire of skills, having held such positions as president of Sigma Theta Tau International (1993-1995), president of Clarkson College Omaha (1991-1997), and university-wide planning director for the Institutional Research University of San Francisco (1989-1991). Likewise, she developed a college in Nebraska into an efficient and profitable institute while serving as its president. Now a professor and chairwoman at Holy Names University, Dr. Bower conducts health care research by employing her relentless determination and honest passion for her profession.

An expert in evidence-based practice, research and community health care, Dr. Bower has made significant contributions to the field by serving as president of several organizations and chairwoman of many committees. In the past five years, she has served as the president of the Chaparral Homeowners Association, sat on the advisory board of the California Nurses Foundation, and acted as the chairwoman of the International Taskforce on Leadership Mentoring. In addition, she was a thought leader for the California Institute for Nursing & Health Care from 2007 to 2008, a Magnet appraiser for the American Nurses Credentialing Center from 2007 to the present, the president of the Nu Xi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, and a member of the Association of California Nurse Leaders. To remain active in her field, she retains an affiliation with the American Journal of Nursing as a peer reviewer and publishes industry-related articles and books, including her most recent book, "Why Retire? Career Strategies for Third Age Nurses," which she co-authored with Dr. William A. Sadler. In addition, she travels around the world as a consultant to nursing faculty members as they design, modify and develop new curricula. Dr. Bower truly believes that being a leader is a cooperative venture with others and that a successful leader is one who can look back and see what others have accomplished because of that relationship.

Dr. Bower holds a Doctor of Science in nursing and a Master of Science from the University of California, San Francisco, as well as a Bachelor of Science in nursing from San Jose State University. In recognition of her vocational excellence, she has received a leadership award and lifetime achievement award from the Nu Xi chapter at large of Sigma Tau International, as well as several other lifetime achievement awards, including ones from Nurse Week/Spectrum and Phi Beta Gamma. Dr. Bower was also named an Outstanding Professor on five occasions at San Jose University, where she worked throughout the 1970s. Even at her current age of 81, Dr. Bower intends to continue her commitment and contributions to the health care educational field in the future.
