Joan D. Sigona Receives Professional Networking Community's Highest Honor
Joan D. Sigona Named Health and Technical Education Professional of the Year
AUBURN, NY, September 8, 2010 AUBURN, NY, Joan D. Sigona, Teacher at Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Health and Technical Education. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only two male and two female members in each discipline are named professionals of the year. The Cambridge Who's Who selection committee chooses these special honorees based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements and leadership abilities.
A 41-year veteran of the healthcare profession, Joan D. Sigona brings a wealth of experience to Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES. Respected for her expertise in nursing, she educates adult and high school pupils to become New York State-certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses and home health aides. Ms. Sigona began her career as an LPN in 1969, an RN in 1972, and in 1973 found her way to Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, where she educated LPNs. Beginning in the late 1970's she tutored her LPN graduates so that they could become RNs and then in 2007, began tutoring registered nurses so that they could obtain their Baccalaureate nursing degrees from Keuka College.
Since devoting her career to educating others, Ms. Sigona helped create the Laura Deacon Shenk $300.00 scholarship for a child with special needs; Ms. Shenk was a BOCES Special Education teacher who died from breast cancer. Ms. Sigona also created a $200.00 scholarship in memory of her neighbor, James Marquart, and her mother Ms. Frances Steigerwald. She attributes her success to her willingness to work long hours and her dedication to advancing her students' skills, self esteem and success in their Health Professional careers.
Ms. Sigona earned her master's degree in health education from SUNY Cortland and her bachelor of science in technical education from SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica-Rome. A registered nurse through Onondaga Community College, she holds a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from SUNY Brockport and a certification in general nursing practice from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is a staff development professional recipient through New York State United Teachers, a delegate of the Cayuga County Labor Council, and the current treasurer of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services Teachers' Association and COCAT, the Cayuga-Onondaga County Area Teachers' Group. Additional affiliations include the Cayuga-Onondaga Teacher Resource Center Policy Board, New York State United Teachers, Eta Sigma Gamma, the National Association of Female Executives, Who's Who in America's Teachers, and Outstanding American Educators.
