Megan M. Strom aims to eradicate the racist elements evident in everyday language
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, August 04, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Megan M. Strom, MA-Applied Linguistics, Spanish Instructor at the University of Minnesota, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in education.
Spanish instructor at the University of Minnesota, Ms. Strom specializes in Critical Discourse Analysis. She teaches Spanish Communication and Compositions, writes the syllabus, assignments and examinations, and assesses student performances, as well as conducts research. After being entirely immersed in the language and culture of Latin America, she was transformed from a music major into a passionate linguistics student with a desire to teach. Her field of study, Critical Discourse Analysis, is vital to her desire to teach because it uncovers the power and ideology in language. She feels that this study is extremely useful in the United States, where there are so many immigrants and minority populations without a voice to be heard. The study uncovers the racist elements seen everyday in language and discourse.
Currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Minnesota, Ms. Strom received her Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics from the Universidad de las Americas in 2008. She is a member of The International Society for Language Studies, Inc. and has received fellowships at the University of Minnesota and at the Universidad de las Americas. She became involved in her profession through her interest in language and culture, and she attributes her success to her work ethic. In the future, she intends to complete her Ph.D. and work as a professor in a research institution.
