Dr. Florence L. Ames Honored for Accomplishments in Education
Florence L. Ames celebrates 30 years of professional experience

HOPEDALE, MA, November 23, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Florence L. Ames, Retired Associate Professor of English at York College of Pennsylvania, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in higher education.

Dr. Ames has 30 years of professional experience, including 21 years of experience as an assistant and associate professor of English at York College of Pennsylvania. Prior to retiring in 1997, she taught literature and writing courses. She once delivered the commencement address to graduating seniors, a moment she recalls as a highlight of her career. Dr. Ames retains an expertise in short stories, and women's and British literature. She is the author of "'That Sovereign Knowledge," the history of the first 100 years of York Hospital in York, PA. Dr. Ames credits her career accomplishments to her determination and lifelong interest in teaching. She has directed private writing groups and is currently working with two women who are writing a novel. She is a reporter and editor of a monthly, local, town newspaper and does the production work for her condo association newsletter.

Although she did not attend college until she was 34, Dr. Ames earned a Ph.D. in English language and literature from Boston University in 1974. She was also granted a fellowship. She is the 1993 recipient of the Professional Service and Leadership Award from York College of Pennsylvania's alumni association. She has a master of arts degree in religion from Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In her spare time, Dr. Ames volunteers for her local town hall's senior citizens tax abatement program. In the future, she hopes to obtain a consulting position.
